From vision to action: an integrated digital ecosystem transforming urban management in real time
Castellammare di Stabia, May 5, 2026 – The city of Castellammare di Stabia has won the prestigious Smart City Observatory Award from the Politecnico di Milano thanks to the “Castellammare Digitale” project, establishing itself as one of the most advanced examples of urban digital transformation in Italy.
Selected among over 400 projects submitted by 92 municipalities, the project was the sole winner in Axis A.3.1 “Implementation of e-government services,” confirming the administration’s ability to develop a concrete, integrated, and replicable smart city model.
“Castellammare Digitale” is not just a project: it represents a tangible transformation in how a city observes, interprets, and manages its territory. It is an integrated infrastructure that brings together data, sensors, and video surveillance systems into a single digital ecosystem capable of supporting fast, effective, and evidence-based decision-making.
At the core of the system is the “City Dashboard”: an advanced platform that provides a unified, real-time view of what is happening across the territory, turning urban complexity into actionable insights.
The strategic role of video analytics and artificial intelligence
A distinctive element of the project is the integration of advanced video analytics systems based on artificial intelligence, developed in collaboration with A.I. Tech srl.
The implemented software solutions enable real-time monitoring of vehicular and pedestrian flows as well as urban safety, through deep learning algorithms capable of detecting, classifying, and tracking movements across the territory. This approach allows not only the analysis of historical data, but above all the dynamic interpretation of what is happening in the city, improving mobility management, urban safety, and intervention planning.
The video surveillance network thus evolves from a passive system into an intelligent infrastructure: OCR gateways perform over 500,000 license plate readings per day, while AI algorithms detect risk situations or anomalies, supporting operational decisions by law enforcement and involved entities.
A model of an integrated and sustainable city
The “Castellammare Digitale” project has mobilized over €2.2 million through a multi-channel funding approach involving local, national, and metropolitan public resources, demonstrating how a strategic vision can be translated into concrete and operational infrastructure.
Today, the system is used daily by four law enforcement agencies and represents a tangible example of how data integration can improve administrative efficiency, safety, and citizens’ quality of life.
“This recognition confirms that Castellammare is building a solid and innovative vision of the city, where technology is not an end in itself but a tool to better manage the territory and respond more effectively to citizens’ needs,” commented Mayor Luigi Vicinanza.
The contribution of partners
The success of the project is the result of a synergistic collaboration between public and private sectors.
Alongside the central role of the Municipality, A.I. Tech made a key contribution to the development of video analytics modules, while Deda Next supported the implementation of the digital infrastructure and the data integration platform, enabling the creation of the “City Dashboard” and ensuring interoperability between different systems. The technological ecosystem is completed by Meteo Giuliacci, for environmental sensors and weather stations, and Milestone for the VMS platform, contributing to making Castellammare a cutting-edge laboratory for urban innovation.
